Carla undertook pupillage with chambers following which she accepted the offer of a tenancy. She has developed a busy junior practice within the Civil and Commercial and Property teams in chambers specialising in housing, nusiance and landlord and tenant (particularly disability discrimination claims) as well as employment law and commercial disputes.
Carla is regularly instructed for individuals, Trade Unions, Local Authorities, Housing Associations, large national and multinational companies. She has argued employment, discrimination, trade union cases in the Employment Tribunal. In property, commercial and procedural issue cases she has appeared in the County Court, the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal, High Court, as well as the Court of Appeal.
Carla's recent and current caseload includes instructions in several high value claims involving large national and multi-national companies and she has appeared in the County Court and the High Court in cases concerning insolvency, trusts of land, restrictive covenants, service charges, planning enforcement prosecutions, disablity discrimination in the context of a landlord and tenant case, residential and commercial possession claims including nuisance neighbour cases, injunctions, construction disputes and commercial contract claims. She has experience in dealing with cases involving expert witnesses.
Carla was instructed by one of the banks involved in the bank charges litigation which is ongoing in the High Court. She has advised on and appeared in several solicitors professional negligence cases. She was instructed by the Legal Services Commission in the Court of Appeal in the reported case of Elia Aziz Youanas v Mary Elkomos [2007] EWCA Civ 1902 which dealt with the situation where a Judge in the County Court rejected a purported settlement agreement within ancillary relief proceedings and the costs implications that flowed from that decision.
Carla is currently a member of the College of Law's Higher Rights Teaching Panel and Panel of Assessors. She also teaches civil litigation courses (run by the College of Law) at City law firms.
Carla is a council member of the National Secular Society (www.secularism.org.uk ) which works to remove religious privilege from society. She advises the NSS on Human Rights and discrimination issues in both the public law and private law arena. She was recently completed an Opinion on the issue of religious discrimination and sexual orientation discrimination in employment law including in faith schools, and the compatibility of the UK Regulations with the EU Directive. Carla recently attended a meeting in Parliament on behalf of the NSS and advised a group of Trades Union officials, MPs and Peers on the interpretation of the faith schools statutory provisions and the impact of the new Education and Inpsections Bill on Head Teachers.
