For domestic work our barristers are normally required to receive instructions through solicitors on a referral basis. However lawyers, businesses or individuals based outside the United Kingdom are entitled to instruct barristers in relation to a whole range of issues directly, without the need for referral through a UK solicitor:

  • Specialist advice on English law;

  • European Community and International Law, including Human Rights law;

  • Specialist advice and assistance on the drafting, interpretation and enforceability of contracts governed by the law in England and Wales, or the laws of other common law countries;

  • Specialist advice on commercial situations presenting legal, factual or technical difficulties;

  • Arbitration services in England and Wales and in most other jurisdictions;

  • Mediation and other alternative dispute resolution services (as mediators, advocates or advisers);

  • Expert witness services;

  • Specialist advocacy services before European and international courts and tribunals;

  • Specialist advice and assistance in the preparation of litigation or in a non-litigious context.

33 Bedford Rows includes members who have litigation experience in Europe and we offer specialist services to Polish clients. Roman Poplawski, head of 33 Bedford Row Polish Client Services is, amongst other things the translator of the Polish civil code into English and has extensive experience of Anglo-Polish litigation both in an advisory and litigation context. Renata Jurenko is on the list of preferred Counsel maintained by the Polish Consulate.

Other Members of Chambers undertaking civil work are dual qualified in other jurisdictions.

Please contact our clerks for further information about your particular situation.

In the case of anticipated litigation in the courts of England and Wales, it is highly recommended that you contact a barrister first if you are a foreign lawyer or business based abroad. A member of Chambers will be able to give you an initial assessment of your case at very competitive rates and advise on the most suitable firm of solicitors to use if you wish. Barristers deal with many dozens of firms of solicitors and know their strengths and specialist areas. They cannot receive any financial inducement for such a referral.

Chambers has a growing presence in international and cross border work and undertakes criminal, commercial or chancery work where appropriate. Chambers is well placed to recommend leading counsel if so advised.

Once litigation within the jurisdiction of England and Wales is commenced English law normally requires that a barrister be instructed through a solicitor. Further details may obtained and our clerks will be pleased to discuss your requirements with you.

Barristers at 33 Bedford Row are fluent in Polish, Spanish and French.
