Prosecution and defence work at both first instance and appellate level covering all aspects of crime including financial crime, corporate fraud, regulatory crime, drugs, deception, money laundering. Also, licensing work undertaken for Applicants and Respondents and appellate work for the police and licensing justices.
Criminal cases of Interest:
R-v-Millen, Bowers & Taylor [1998] (Court of Appeal): re adverse inferences from defendant’s silence in interview.
R-v-Gibbins & Others [May 2003-July 2004] led junior for the defence in SFO fraud arising from an “arrangement fee” fraud to the value of £80 million: R-v-Gibbins [2004] EWCA Crim 311: re burden of proof applicable when prosecution seeks to rely on the “fraud exception” to the protection provided by legal professional privilege; R-v-Gibbins [2004]; R-v-B (2) G (Interlocutory) [2004] EWCA Crim 1368: successful appeal of High Court judge’s injunction prohibiting the use of material mistakenly disclosed by the Crown.
R-v-Simpson & Hinds [2005] (defending firearms trial arising from Operation Trident): Inner London Crown Court;
R-v-Archers (UK) Ltd.& Haddad [2007]: led by David Barnard (Standing Counsel for HM Revenue & Customs) in successful prosecution of money laundering/MTIC fraud.
Miscellaneous: successful defence in relation to charges of serious sexual assault on a minor;

T (R on the application of)-v-Serious Fraud Office [2003]: application to vary restraint order coupled with SFO action to set aside mortgage on restrained property. Also, extensive experience of cash detention and forfeiture cases under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

(2003) Advised Messrs. McLean McNally, International Attorneys, Providenciales, Turks & Caicos in relation to the first copyright case brought in that jurisdiction (re application and extension of the Copyright Acts 1911 and 1956, and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1989 to the Turks and Caicos Islands).

extensive experience in all aspects of family law including: public and private law applications under the Children Act 1989 and the Adoption and Children Act; ancillary relief; property disputes between cohabitees; applications under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. Particular recent experience of care cases involving allegations of serious sexual abuse and non-accidental injury.
Family cases of interest
2006-2007: Representing parent in public law proceedings brought by Essex County Council involving allegations of sexual abuse perpetrated by an extensive paedophile ring.
October 2006: represented Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council in care proceedings involving the alleged serious sexual abuse of a baby.
