(9 to 10 December 2022) Dr Chelvan, Head of Immigration and Public Law has returned from Malta having contributed to the two-day 2022 Annual Meeting of the EUAA Pool of Judicial Experts – “Judicial skills specific to international protection judges”.

Invited as an independent expert of refugee claims based on SOGIE (Sexual-orientation/identity, Gender Identity and Expression) by the EU Asylum Agency, Chelvan’s presentation was entitled “Creating Sanctuary in the Courtroom: Your turn to Speak, My Turn to Listen”.  Chelvan shared and launched at the meeting of over 50 Court of Tribunal Judges his “The Safe SPACE model”, where SPACE stood for “Safety, Person, Asylum Claim, Control and Evidence” – a model to assist Judges in creating the Safe Space in the Courtroom, from a SOGIE perspective.

Speaking on Chelvan’s contribution to the meeting, M. Leplomb, Senior Officer, EUAA said:

“Members of Courts and Tribunals benefited greatly from Dr. S. Chelvan’s expertise on how to ensure a safe environment in the courtroom and build rapport with applicants for international protection”
