On 15 November 2023, the UK Supreme Court (UKSC) unanimously upheld the Court of Appeal’s Judgment and found that the government’s ‘Rwanda Policy’ is unlawful.

Dr Chelvan, Head of Immigration and Public Law at 33 Bedford Row, was invited to discuss the Rwanda Judgment on BBC World News on the day of the Judgment.

Dr Chelvan discusses the UK Supreme Court decision that the UK government’s policy to send asylum seekers to Rwanda to have their claims processed, and to then stay if successful, is unlawful.

Some quotes from the interview below, and the segment can also be watched in full:

  • "This is a wonderful example of the British constitution at work: we have independent British judges, in a British court, applying British law, to say that Rwanda does not comply her international treaty obligations to ensure that refugees who come to the country, are treated fairly and properly.
  • "The evidence shows that the Rwanda does not protect refugees."
  • "What we should be doing, is determining the refugee claims in the UK."
  • "We know that the majority of the people who come to the UK to claim asylum are genuine [...] We should be determining these claims ourselves."

Dr Chelvan was also invited to speak on Talk TV on 16th November 2023.

On the Ian Collins Show, Dr Chelvan debated with ex UKIP leader Henry Bolton OBE over "how the Government will stop the small boats."
