International Women's Day, which takes place on March 8th, is a global day celebrating the "social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women".

Ayesha Smart, one of Chambers' Equality and Diversity Officers explains that 33 Bedford Row has 49 women out of 100 full time members - an achievement for both the successes of our female barristers who are getting quality instruction, and for 33 Bedford Row as a whole where we pride ourselves on equality and diversity.

Deborah Bryan, Family Law Practitioner and also one of our Equality and Diversity Officers, gives the following testimony on International Women's Day 2022, outlining the important work of the Women in the Law Group and all the women in law who are "the backbone and the frontline of the legal system".  A special tribute is also given to Jocelyn Gibbs, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago and was one of the founding members of the Society of Black Lawyers

"On International Women's Day 2022, I would like to express by deep admiration for all that the Women in the Law Group do to blaze a trail for diversity in the law. Special thank to founder Sally Penni MBE for her tireless work and those brilliant podcast which showcase the diverse movers and shakers.

On this day we should also remember the other women in the law that are the backbone and frontline of the legal system. I am speaking of the court clerks, ushers and ancillary staff many of whom are women and the increasing number of female barristers clerks. Times are changing as women in the law increase in numbers at all levels.

I would also like to post a belated tribute to a pioneering black woman barrister Jocelyn Gibbs who passed away a few weeks ago. She was one of the founder members of the Society of Black Lawyers and the first barrister I ever clerked as a student."

Human Rights Barrister and Activist Lawyer, Diana Constantinide, wishes a Happy International Womens Day to all and explains that "33BR stands today for the Human Rights of women everywhere and celebrates the progress made in Women’s Rights. It is a day to call for an end to gender inequality and our barristers not only women, work towards a united, equal and sustainable future."

Pupil at Chambers, Olivia Beach adds to this, "As someone relatively new and junior in the legal profession, International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to reflect on the important progress made to ensure the profession is supportive and inclusive for all men and women, whilst also recognising how we can continue that progress moving forward. I feel very lucky to be a part of 33 Bedford Row and to work alongside colleagues fighting for women’s rights everywhere."

Congratulating & thanking all our female members at Chambers today and everyday. Happy International Women's Day to all.
