(27 February 2023) Head of Immigration and Public Law, Dr S Chelvan, appeared on Talk TV’s Ian Collins’ show to discuss what is been reported as a government  ‘ceasefire’ with 60 Conservative MPs .  The MPs were threatening to derail the government’s Illegal Migration Bill, unless amendments were made to curb the ability of European Court of Human Rights’ Judges to stop deportations.

Dr Chelvan highlighted the further battles ahead for the government who seek safe passage of the Bill through the House of Commons, and the House of Lords, and if passed, eventually the British Courts and our independent judges.  Dr Chelvan highlighted the framework and content of the Bill undermined traditional British legal principles, there to protect British values - rendering Dr Chelvan re-naming the Bill, the Illegal Illegal Migration Bill.
