Dr S Chelvan - Head of Immigration and Public Law at 33 Bedford Row - was recently interviewed on Peter Cardwell's Show for Talk TV.

The panel on the show, which included Dr Chelvan and Steven Woolfe (director of The Centre for Migration & Economic Prosperity), were asked to discuss Head of UN Relief Tom Ritchie's video which can be watched here. The video shows the current situation where Afghan refugees have been forced to return to Afghanistan from Pakistan.

The discussion centred around the perception that the video evidenced Afghanistan as a ‘safe country’ and should we be doing something about the Afghani refugees in the UK who were brought in via safe routes.

Chelvan explains that those given asylum are not returnable and are given '5 years leave to remain' before applying for 'indefinite leave to remain', depending on active review.

Dr Chelvan also points out that Tom Ritchie's video is about forced displacement from Pakistan to Afghanistan, which has been happening for many years - 'they are not saying these people are safe' [..] We know that women are not safe. We know that LGBTQI people are not safe. We know that ethnic minorities are not safe."

The panel also discuss the recent Upper Tribunal case regarding the appeal of a man with a tattoo being granted asylum where Dr Chelvan explains that the tattoo was only a small part or 'trigger' of the wider reasons why the individual was granted asylum.
