It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David Nowell Barnard, chambers' first and founder Head of Chambers.

David led Chambers from the early 1980’s until his retirement in 2010. Called to the Bar in 1967, David was an outstanding advocate known for his clarity of thought and exposition. Although serving as Standing Counsel to Customs and Excise his practice encompassed the full range of common law disputes. He was a strong proponent of education and training for the Bar and in the 1970’s produced seminal works focusing on practice and procedure, The Civil Court in Action, The Criminal Court in Action and the Family Court in Action. These introduced a generation of students to how the courts actually worked. In his retirement he set about writing the History of his beloved Grays Inn.

David will be greatly missed by his friends and remembered by a multitude of students who owe him so much.

David's funeral has already taken place.
